We are hot on the heels of March, but the bugs of the winter are still lingering. Whether it be the flu, stomach bug or a cough that doesn't seem to go away, many of us were not spared- especially if you have germ-sharers (AKA children) involved. Everywhere we go, there is the potential to pick up a germ that might knock you down for a few days, or maybe even weeks.
In my house, we have gotten off relatively easy (so far, fingers crossed) with just one of us having a cough. Which is actually quite impressive considering the amount these kids pick their noses and drink out of everyone's cups. I am on two immuno-suppressants for my Rheumatoid Arthritis, so there's always a big risk of catching something.
As I dive deeper into herbalism, elderberry extract seemed of particular interest to me to help keep my immune system healthy. One of my biggest fears is all of us getting sick and not being able to care for my children. Studies have shown that syrup made with elderberries can help boost the immune system and, if you do get sick, help lessen the severity and amount of days you have symptoms.
But don't just take my word for it:
After researching and consulting my course teachings, I went on to develop a few different recipes of elderberry syrup, which I am excited to share with you! I always put thought and consideration into every product I make and I always use it myself first.
Our elderberry syrup is made with organic elderberries, organic orange peels, cloves, raw, organic and sustainably-sourced honey and filtered water. Because honey is a main ingredient, it should not be given to babies under the age of one.
The Maintain formula is an equal balance of berries and honey and great to take if you've been exposed to illness or will be traveling soon (ages 1 & up). Try the Maintain w/Vitamin D for a boost of this essential vitamin that most people are lacking, especially in the winter months (ages 12 & up). One teaspoon a day.
The Acute formula should be used at the first signs of illness (ages 1 & up). Ages 1-12: One to Two teaspoons a day. 12 & up: Take one teaspoon up to 4x a day for up to 10 days. The elderberry extract is much more concentrated with this version.
Acute packs a bigger punch with the addition of Echinacea angustifolia, which is extracted by us from grain alcohol over a 6 week time period. Do not use if you are immunocompromised or are taking medication to lower your immune system.
It's an acquired, but sweet taste that most children won't shy away from. Put it in your juice, tea, or water or even on top of your pancakes! Click on the button below to order.
As with adding any health aid to your regime, always check with your physician first. Just because it's natural doesn't mean it is meant from everyone and your health is more important to me!
